On November 26, a fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po. It spread across bamboo scaffolding and green mesh surrounding the buildings undergoing renovation work. At least 146 people have died, while thousands of residents have sought refuge in temporary shelters across the district.

Hong Kong Red Cross Emergency Appeal

The Hong Kong Red Cross has launched an emergency response, deploying personnel to temporary shelters to provide first aid services, essential supplies and psychological support.

Services provided:

On-site first aid services
Emergency cash assistance
Daily essential supplies
Psychological support services
Post-disaster recovery assistance

How to donate:

Online: Visit the Red Cross website to make a credit card donation with encryption protection

FPS (Faster Payment System): Transfer to Hong Kong Red Cross FPS ID: 164279317. Send a screenshot of your transaction with your name, telephone number and postal address to relief@redcross.org.hk and crd@redcross.org.hk with "TPFEA" in the subject for a receipt.

PayMe or AlipayHK: Make your donation through these platforms and email transaction details to relief@redcross.org.hk and crd@redcross.org.hk with "TPFEA" in the subject for a receipt.

Bank Transfer: Direct deposit to Hong Kong Red Cross bank accounts (details available on their website). Mail the original bank pay-in-slip with a completed donation form to receive an official receipt.

Physical Donations: Essential Supplies

Before donating physical items, please check with organisations first to confirm current needs, as temporary shelters may already have sufficient supplies.

As of Thursday morning, local reports indicate that donation points have become overwhelmed and have temporarily stopped accepting physical items.

The Hong Kong Red Cross maintains pre-positioned stocks of relief materials at their Local Disaster Relief Materials Handling Centre in West Kowloon, including clothing, blankets and daily necessities.

Items originally requested include:

Blankets and sleeping mats
New underwear, jackets, and pyjamas
Power banks and charging cables
Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
Basic toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo

Local charity Feeding Hong Kong are are actively looking for community support.

The Amber Foundation which supports marginalised communities in Hong Kong are collecting hygiene items through their Toiletries Project, including:

  • travel size soap, lotion, shampoo, shower gel, face cream, face wash, mouth wash and conditioner

  • sleeping masks/eye shades
  • airline socks
  • hotel slippers
  • lip balm
  • hotel/airline comb
  • hotel loofah
  • cotton buds
  • shower caps
  • empty pouches

The Women of Hong Kong

Tatler Hong Kong community member Sarah Vee has offered to mobilise her network of 3,000+ members at The Women of Hong Kong to coordinate volunteer support, supplies, transport, translators, counselling and emergency assistance.

Services offered:

Volunteer mobilisation (including translators)
Supply coordination (blankets, water, power banks) 
Specialised services and emergency message distribution

Insurance services

Fred Ngan and his team at Bowtie Life Insurance Company are assisting affected residents in understanding their insurance policies and Hong Kong's insurance laws. You can call their hotline at 3008 8132.

 

Mental Health Support

The Government's Mental Health Support Hotline has increased capacity to handle calls from people needing emotional support.

18111 Mental Health Support Hotline 

  • Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Operated by Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong
  • Provides immediate counselling, support, and referrals
  • Also available via WhatsApp
  • Supports multiple languages: Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Punjabi, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Bengali, and Thai
  • Completely free and confidential

The "Shall We Talk" social media channels are also posting support information for coping with stress.

HELP for Domestic Workers is providing emergency shelter, help with replacement of missing passports, identification and other crucial documents as well as mental health counselling. For more information call +852 2523 4020 or WhatsApp +852 5936 3780.

The Wemp Foundation spearheaded by Adrian Cheng are offering counselling to those struggling with the aftermath of the fires. A team of therapists and counsellors, together with Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China are providing emotional support for children and families. Call the team on +852-28553846 or WhatsApp +852-67548932 between 9am-5pm.

Government Emergency Relief Fund

The Tai Po District Office is assisting families of the deceased and injured with applications for the Emergency Relief Fund and Special Aid Fund.

The Emergency Relief Fund provides prompt cash assistance to persons in urgent need following natural disasters such as fires. Grants are intended for relief rather than compensation. 

Who can apply: Victims of the fire and their families

How to apply: The Tai Po District Office will provide direct assistance with applications. Interdepartmental help desks have been established at:

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital
Prince of Wales Hospital
North District Hospital
Staff at these locations can assist with enquiries and applications.

Animal Rescue Hotline

If any animals require help, call the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on the 24-hour animal rescue hotline at 2711 1000. Visit https://www.spca.org.hk for more details.

Temporary Accommodation Support

The Hong Kong Housing Authority has coordinated extensive housing resources for affected residents:

Over 2,000 temporary housing units
Temporary shelter beds
Over 1,400 transitional housing units available for immediate occupancy

Additional accommodation:

Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong has opened 900 free temporary accommodation spaces at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village
Eight temporary shelters across Tai Po District

Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong

Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong is providing long-term housing support to families affected by the Wang Fuk Court fire. The organisation is supplying essential household items including blankets, beds, tables, chairs, rice cookers, portable heaters and kettles. With expertise in supporting elderly residents, Habitat will focus on helping vulnerable community members re-establish stable living conditions. All funds raised go directly towards providing essential items to affected families.

Several local businesses have stepped forward to provide immediate assistance:

McDonald's Tai Po: Three 24-hour McDonald's restaurants in Tai Po are offering free food and drinks to residents affected by the fire.

CSL Mobile: Providing free additional mobile data to affected customers, lending chargers, and extending operating hours of the Tai Po Mega Mall store until 11pm.
